General Frugal Tips
- Pack lunches instead of buying at school or work.
- Save bags from bread and produce, they make great containers for other items such as produce, and baking from scratch.
- Sharpen your scissors with sandpaper, a few cuts will sharpen them right up.
- No Candle holders for your birthday candles? Use a life saver, kids love it, and they are adorable!!
- Reuse old linens to make new linens. An old towel can make dish towels and washclothes. Sheets can be used for Pillow cases, and quilt backings. Table clothes can make cloth Napkins. Curtains can be made from old table clothes, and old curtains can make throw pillows.
- Close off unused rooms. Close the air ducts and doors in rooms used mostly for storage and occasionally for guests. Closing unused rooms may reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20 percent, depending on the proportion of your home's total square footage the closed rooms comprise.
- Make your own postcards from heavy junk mail. Use the lighter
pieces for notes.
- Though I am on a tight budget, by taking advantage of the "buy one, get one free" specials on products that I regulary use I am able to help those out there who are less fortunate than I. I set aside the "free" items and when I have a box full I make a trip to local food banks or shelters.
- Save your Greeting Cards and use them for crafts, wrapping paper, or make new greeting cards with them with cardstock
- Save your junk mail and use it for scrap paper, and to light fires with.
- Clean all the vents and filters for your heating and air conditioning. An efficient furnace uses less electricity.
- Use lots of insulation- insulate floors, heating ducts that are in unheated areas, hot water heaters, and pipes.
- Invest in a digital thermostat, and program it to lower the heat at night.
- Use window quilts and plastic to cut down on drafts and heat loss thru windows.
- Look for drafty spots, and find ways to plug them up. Foam insulation on doors, towels to cover gaps.
- Got to the Library for movies instead of the movie store.
